the boundless ambition of youthful expectations are juxtaposed
with the unpredictable, and sometimes tragic realities
we end up living. We hear the words of children and Bernal
Heights seniors artfully illustrated by an international
team of 12 illustrators.

Jason Joseffer investigates the rise and demise of San
Francisco neighborhood movie theatres. Having grown up
in the Outer Mission, he was intrigued by the many theatres
within a few blocks of each other that have not stood the
test of time.

the dogs’ perspective. Kuperberg’s short, “Duck

Local rapper Mark Stretch and BAYCAT team up on a music
video that spoofs the creative process and production. Shot
on location and in the Third Street studios.

Scott Kravitz, professional animator, returns with a beautifully
crafted story of an old woman whose weaving serves a higher
purpose. Kravitz’s films “Magic Trick” and “Family
Portrait” were screened in the 2005 Outdoor Cinema
season.

Filmmaker Hypatia Porter examines the life cycle of a paper
cup and the environmental repercussions in the short documentary
shot throughout the Bay Area with interviews from local
conservation experts and activists.

A poignant profile of fiber-sculpture, Judith Scott, who
flourished after 35 years of institutionalization in a
mental facility, due to a misdiagnosis as a result of being
deaf and having Down syndrome.

Nicole, a 14 year old, of Chinese and Korean extraction
lives in a small conservative town in Ohio. Her essay on
same-sex marriage causes controversy both in conservative
and liberal camps in her middle school class.

An animated family feature depicts young Marco, who journeys
to the mythical kingdom of Xanadu, overcoming an evil magician
and many dangers with the help of his friends. Bernal resident,
Ron Merk wrote and directed the International Children’s
Film Festival prizewinner.
SAN FRANCISCO, STILL WILD AT HEART

Melissa Peabody’s quest three years ago to capture
the Bernal coyote’s story has grown into a full-length
documentary examining the phenomenon of wild life returning
to the cities. Before this piece airs on PBS, we get to
see a preview of the segment that features the fauna of
Bernal Hill.

Local screenwriter, Bertron Bruno glimpses a fictional
conversation between three young men from the hood who
are trying to work out their lives in the 21st century.
THE DAYS AND THE HOURS

Documentary producers John Haptas and Kristine Samuelson
look at a weekday morning at St. Boniface Church in San
Francisco’s Tenderloin District, which opens its
doors to homeless people, giving them a place to sleep
for eight hours.

Producer/director Jeremy Kaller looks at an alternative
San Francisco recycling center and profiles the individuals
who are devoted to the reclaiming and reusing of our city’s

BRYANT

Jay Rosenblatt returns with a portrait of this former popular
singer and featured spokesperson for the Florida Orange
industry. In the 1970’s her efforts to overturn Dade
County Florida’s non-discrimination legislation towards
gays inadvertently gave birth to the Gay Rights movement
across the country.
BERNAL BLUES

Our local entry marking the 40th anniversary of the Summer
of Love + three years — Yasha Aginsky, local documentary
filmmaker, presents this nostalgic portrait of Bernal Heights
shot and edited in 1970 and 1971.
